Born 19 July 1971, Klitschko won his first world heavyweight belt in 1999 and spent the next decade trading championships with his younger brother Wladimir, the two dominating the division so completely that the years 2006-2015 are still called the Klitschko Era. He made 12 successful title defenses and never hit the canvas, one of only three heavyweight champions to retire without being knocked down. He stepped away in December 2013 while still holding the WBC title, but politics had already begun: he'd run for Kyiv mayor in 2006, founded the UDAR party in 2010, and stood at the center of the Euromaidan protests in 2013-2014. Elected mayor in May 2014, he has held the post through three terms, surviving party mergers and a failed 2019 parliamentary bid. When Russian forces invaded in February 2022, Klitschko stayed in the capital, and the world watched a former champion defend a city the way he once defended a title.
