He held the heavyweight throne for twelve years - longer than anyone in history - turning a division once known for chaos into a meticulous clinic. The jab, the right hand, the measured distance: Klitschko made dominance look like geometry.

About this person
Wladimir Klitschko won Olympic gold for Ukraine in 1996, finishing his amateur career at 134-6, then turned professional that same year. He took the WBO heavyweight title from Chris Byrd in 2000, lost it in back-to-back upsets to Corrie Sanders in 2003 and Lamon Brewster in 2004, then hired Emanuel Steward - the trainer who'd shaped Lennox Lewis - and rebuilt himself from aggressive puncher to defensive tactician. From 2006 forward he collected belts one by one: the IBF and IBO in a Byrd rematch, the WBO again in 2008, the Ring title in 2009, the WBA in 2011. Alongside his brother Vitali, he controlled heavyweight boxing for over a decade in what became known as the Klitschko Era, racking up 23 title-fight wins and 4,382 days as champion - both all-time records - while his fights drew an estimated 500 million viewers worldwide. He retired in 2017 and entered the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 2021.
