Venus Ebony Star Williams was born June 17, 1980, and turned pro in 1994, coached by her parents Richard Williams and Oracene Price alongside younger sister Serena. She reached her first major final at 17, at the 1997 US Open, then broke through in 2000 and 2001 with back-to-back Wimbledon and US Open doubles plus singles gold at the Sydney Olympics. On February 25, 2002, she became world No. 1 and the first African-American woman to do so in the Open era, the second ever after Althea Gibson. Four straight major finals between 2002 and 2003 all ended in losses to Serena, then injuries held her to one major title between 2003 and 2006 before she took Wimbledon again in 2007 and 2008. She and Serena went unbeaten in 14 major doubles finals together, completed a non-calendar-year Grand Slam in 2010, and collected three Olympic golds in doubles; Venus added a mixed doubles silver in 2016. She reached two more major singles finals in 2017, led the tour in prize money that year and in 2001, and has earned over $42 million across her career.
