Born February 16, 1959, McEnroe turned shot-making into an art form and on-court confrontation into theater, battling umpires as fiercely as he battled Björn Borg and Jimmy Connors. He claimed seven singles majors - four US Opens, three Wimbledons - and became the only man to hold the world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles simultaneously. In 1984 he posted an 82-3 singles record, the best single-season win rate of the Open Era, part of a career haul of 155 titles that no one in the era has matched. He led the U.S. to five Davis Cup titles, then stayed in the game as captain, commentator, and occasional narrator of his own myth.
