Born in February or March 1425 to the Bayandur tribe, Hasan took control of the Aq Qoyunlu state in 1452 and spent the next quarter-century pushing its borders outward. Under his rule the confederation swelled to include parts or all of present-day Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Transcaucasia and Syria - a territorial apex the Aq Qoyunlu would never match again. He died on January 6, 1478, leaving behind the largest footprint any Turkoman federation had carved across the region.
