Greatest shah of the Turkoman Aq Qoyunlu dynasty (r. 1453–1478)
The Aq Qoyunlu confederation reached its widest span under his hand — from Iraq through Iran to Transcaucasia — making him the strongest of the Turkoman rulers who held the ground between Ottoman and Safavid worlds.
Born in February or March 1425 to the Bayandur tribe, Hasan took control of the Aq Qoyunlu state in 1452 and spent the next quarter-century pushing its borders outward. Under his rule the confederation swelled to include parts or all of present-day Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Transcaucasia and Syria — a territorial apex the Aq Qoyunlu would never match again. He died on January 6, 1478, leaving behind the largest footprint any Turkoman federation had carved across the region.
