Born 9 September 1949, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono rose through the armed forces before politics pulled him in: he served twice as Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs between 2000 and 2004. In 2004 he founded the Democratic Party, then entered the country's first direct presidential election and defeated sitting President Megawati Sukarnoputri. Sworn in that October with Jusuf Kalla as vice president, he brokered an end to the Aceh insurgency the following year - a separatist conflict that had burned since 1976 - and earned the title "Father of Peace." He won re-election in 2009 on the first ballot with running mate Boediono, chaired back-to-back ASEAN summits in 2011, and left office in 2014 with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the UN's environmental program. He led the Democratic Party until 2020 and went on to chair the Global Green Growth Institute.
