Born 23 January 1947, Megawati Sukarnoputri is the eldest daughter of Sukarno, Indonesia's first president, and the first president born after independence. She served as vice president under Abdurrahman Wahid from 1999 to 2001, then became president when Wahid was impeached and removed from office in 2001. She ran for re-election in 2004 but was defeated by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, then challenged him again in 2009 and lost a second time. She is the first and current leader of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, one of the country's largest political parties.
