Biography

About

Born in a village near Yogyakarta during Dutch colonial rule, Suharto grew up in humble circumstances after his parents divorced, spending much of his childhood with foster parents. He served in Japanese-organized security forces during occupation, then joined the newly formed Indonesian Army after independence, rising to major general. After countering an attempted coup on 30 September 1965, the army led a nationwide violent anti-communist purge; by March 1967 Suharto was acting president, confirmed the following year. He inherited 650% inflation and deployed free market advisors who stabiliz…
