About this person
Born Mulyono in Surakarta in 1961, Widodo worked in furniture exports before entering politics. As mayor of Surakarta from 2005 to 2012, he became known for blusukan - unannounced walkabouts among residents - and urban renewal projects that caught national attention. A stint as Jakarta governor from 2012 to 2014 launched him to the presidency; he won in 2014 and again in 2019, both times against Prabowo Subianto. His decade in office pushed infrastructure hard, relocated the capital to Nusantara, and took a sharper line on sovereignty issues like illegal fishing in the South China Sea. But the praise for roads and public services ran alongside mounting criticism: the death penalty, curbs on civil liberties, weakened anti-corruption work, environmental damage, and what observers called democratic backsliding. When his son Gibran Rakabuming Raka joined Prabowo's ticket in 2024 - the rival he'd beaten twice - the dynastic optics soured his exit. After leaving office that year, the PDI-P expelled him.
