About this person

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, known as Ahok, rose from regent of East Belitung to the Indonesian legislature before resigning in 2012 to run for deputy governor of Jakarta. He ascended to the top job in November 2014 when his predecessor Joko Widodo became president, making him the first ethnic Chinese and Protestant to govern the capital. Ahead of the 2017 election, political opponents aligned with Islamic extremists and accused him of blasphemy in October 2016. He lost to Anies Baswedan and went to prison.
