Born in Figueres, Catalonia in 1904, Dalí trained in Madrid and moved through Impressionism and Cubism before joining the Surrealist group in 1929. The Persistence of Memory arrived in August 1931 and became his calling card. He spent the Spanish Civil War in France, then fled to the United States in 1940, where commercial success came easily. Returning to Spain in 1948, he declared himself Catholic again and launched into "nuclear mysticism," blending classicism and recent science.
