About this person
Reiner was born in New York City in 1947 to actors Estelle and Carl Reiner. He first became known playing "Meathead" Stivic on All in the Family from 1971 to 1979, winning two Emmys. He turned to directing in 1984 with This Is Spinal Tap, then released Stand by Me in 1986, The Princess Bride in 1987, When Harry Met Sally in 1989, Misery in 1990, and A Few Good Men in 1992, which was nominated for Best Picture. He co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment in 1987 and remained active in progressive political causes, chairing California's First 5 education initiative in 1998 and co-founding the American Foundation for Equal Rights in 2008 to challenge the state's same-sex marriage ban. On December 14, 2025, he and his wife Michele were found stabbed to death in their home; their son Nick has been charged with both murders.
