He bent dangdut - Indonesia's working-class pop form - into a vehicle for piety and mass devotion, mixing Malay swing, Bollywood melody, and Western rock until millions called him the King. The guitar never left his hand, and the sermons never left the songs.

About this person

Rhoma Irama started in the late 1960s with Orkes Melayu Purnama, nudging pop toward the dangdut sound that would define him. He formed Soneta Group and by the 1970s had fused Western rock, Malay rhythm, and Bollywood drama into something new - groundbreaking enough to earn him the title Raja Dangdut, the King. From the late 1970s he steered hard toward Islam, turning his music into a pulpit and commanding a religiously pious pop culture across Indonesia. He built a parallel film career and spent decades in politics, campaigning for the Islamic United Development Party under the New Order, then founding his own Peace and Safe Islamic Party in 2015. He led it until 2018, when he folded it into the National Mandate Party.
