3rd‑century Roman bishop of Rome, Catholic saint, pope during the reign of Alexander Severus
Led the early Church through eight years of relative peace in third-century Rome, then spent centuries mistaken for a martyr he wasn't.
Born in Rome around 175, Urban rose to bishop in 222 after his predecessor Callixtus I was killed. He guided the Christian community until his death on 23 May 230. For generations, the story went that he too had been martyred — a tidy end for a pope in an age of persecution. Recent historical work corrects the record: he died of natural causes, one of the few early bishops to do so.
