Bishop of Rome from c. 218 to c. 223
A third-century bishop of Rome who opened the church's doors to converts from breakaway sects — and died for it. The patron saint of cemetery workers was killed under Roman rule for refusing to renounce the faith.
Callixtus served as bishop of Rome from around 218 until his death around 222 or 223, during the reigns of emperors Elagabalus and Alexander Severus. When he succeeded Zephyrinus in 217, he made a decisive break with earlier practice: he began admitting converts from rival sects and schisms into the Church. The Liberian catalogue records his episcopate as five years. He was killed for being Christian, and the Catholic Church venerates him as both saint and martyr.
