Pope and Bishop of Rome from 254 to 257
A 3rd-century bishop who held Rome's chair for three years and died at the altar—or so the later stories claim—before the church turned him into a saint.
Stephen became Bishop of Rome on 12 May 254, stepping into the seat during Christianity's contested early centuries. He held the office until his death on 2 August 257. Some accounts say he was killed while celebrating Mass, though the details remain murky across the distance of seventeen centuries. The church canonized him afterward, fixing his name in the long roll of saints.
