Pope
His papacy began with a fight for the chair itself — supporters of a rival bishop forced Emperor Honorius to settle who actually held Rome's see in 418.
Boniface I became bishop of Rome on 28 December 418, but not without contest: backers of Eulalius disputed the election until the emperor stepped in to end it. Once secure, he turned to tightening church discipline and rebalancing power among the sees — restoring privileges to Narbonne and Vienne and pulling them out from under the primacy of Arles. Augustine of Hippo, writing in North Africa at the same time, dedicated some of his works to him. Boniface died on 4 September 422, four years after the struggle that opened his tenure.
