Pope and bishop of Rome (tenure 296-304)
The bishop of Rome who may or may not have cracked under Diocletian's machinery — the sources disagree, and the church has never quite settled it. Augustine said no. The martyr lists said nothing at all.
Marcellinus became bishop of Rome on 30 June 296, leading the church through eight years that ended in Diocletian's systematic persecution of Christians. Some historical sources claimed he renounced his faith under pressure before repenting; others, including Augustine of Hippo, rejected the accusation outright. The uncertainty is stark enough that his name appears on no martyr rolls. He died in 304. The Catholic Church and the Serbian Orthodox Church venerate him as a saint regardless, the old charge neither proven nor entirely cleared.
