Born Angelo Corraro around 1327, he became head of the Catholic Church on 30 November 1406, inheriting a fractured institution: the Western Schism had already produced rival claimants in Avignon and Pisa, each declaring themselves the true pope. Gregory XII faced off against Benedict XIII in Avignon and, later, Alexander V and John XXIII from the Pisan line. For nearly a decade he maneuvered through the chaos, but unification remained out of reach.
