About this person

Born to a poor family in the Austrian Empire in 1835, Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto became head of the Catholic Church in August 1903. He spent his pontificate fortifying doctrine against what he called the synthesis of every heresy - modernism - while advancing a liturgical revolution from the other direction: active participation by the faithful, frequent Communion, First Communion for younger children. He promoted Thomist philosophy in Catholic institutions, initiated the first comprehensive Code of Canon Law, and overhauled the Roman Curia in 1908. After the Messina earthquake that same year, he filled the Apostolic Palace with refugees before the Italian government moved. He refused favours for his family, preached from the pulpit himself, and kept to a Franciscan austerity. He died in August 1914, was canonized forty years later, and left his name on a town and a statue in Saint Peter's.
