Biography

About

Born to a poor family in the Austrian Empire in 1835, Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto became head of the Catholic Church in August 1903. He spent his pontificate fortifying doctrine against what he called the synthesis of every heresy — modernism — while advancing a liturgical revolution from the other direction: active participation by the faithful, frequent Communion, First Communion for younger children. He promoted Thomist philosophy in Catholic institutions, initiated the first comprehensive Code of Canon Law, and overhauled the Roman Curia in 1908. After the Messina earthquake that same year,…
