— Encyclical Etsi multa, 21 November 1873, St. Peter's Basilica, and also readable on the Holy See website
Pope Pius IX
said · 17 Mar 1856

— Encyclical Singulari Quidem, 17 March 1856, St. Peter's Basilica

said · undated
It is certain that men’s prayers are more pleasing to God if they go up to Him from a pure heart; from souls, that is, that are free from all sin.
— Act. et Decr. Sacr. Concil. Recent., Coll. Lac. tom. VII, Freiburg im Breisgau, 1890, col. 10 as quoted in Paenitentiam Agere, encyclical
