About

Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici was born into Florence's ruling banking dynasty on 11 December 1475, second son of Lorenzo de' Medici, and became a cardinal at fourteen in 1489. Elected pope in March 1513 after winning support from younger cardinals following Julius II's death, he closed the Fifth Council of the Lateran but failed to enact its reforms, then drained papal coffers waging war in 1517 to install his nephew as Duke of Urbino. His sale of indulgences to fund the rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica triggered Martin Luther's 95 Theses; Leo responded in 1520 with the bull Exsurge Domine,…
