Pope
A ninth-century pope who held the chair of Peter for roughly two years at the close of the 800s, when Rome's bishops ruled both souls and territories in a fragmenting post-Carolingian world.
Born around 825, he rose through the church during an era when the papacy was as much political prize as spiritual office. In January 898 he became bishop of Rome and ruler of the Papal States, inheriting a landscape of rival claimants and unstable alliances. His pontificate lasted just over two years. He died in January 900, one pope in a rapid succession that marked the church's turbulent passage into the tenth century.
