Pope of the Catholic Church from 1254 to 1261
He held the papacy through seven years of 13th-century Christendom, and in 1255 declared Clare of Assisi a saint—cementing the Poor Clares, the order she founded, into the church's permanent structure.
Born somewhere between 1185 and 1199, he rose through the church to its summit on 12 December 1254. The canonization of Clare of Assisi came the following year, formalizing her legacy and the women's order she had built. He ruled the Papal States and led the Catholic world until his death on 25 May 1261, seven years into his pontificate.
