Pope
He convened a council to strip nobles of their grip on papal elections — a bid to keep Rome's throne from becoming a prize fought over by rival families.
Stephen was a Benedictine monk working in the Lateran Palace under Pope Zachary. In 768, amid a chaotic scramble by competing factions to name a successor to Pope Paul I, he was elected bishop of Rome with backing from Roman officials. The following year he summoned the Lateran Council of 769, which moved to curb the power of the nobility in choosing popes. The council also took a stand against iconoclasm. Stephen ruled the Papal States until his death on 24 January 772.
