Pope
He held the papacy for fourteen months during famine and war in ninth-century Italy, then died on the road before finishing his second year.
Adrian III became bishop of Rome on 17 May 884, stepping into leadership of the Papal States at a moment when Italy was gripped by famine and conflict. His papacy centered on relief work, trying to shore up a population under siege by hunger and violence. He served little more than a year. On 8 July 885, while still in office, he died — his tenure cut short mid-stride.
