Pope
The pope who inherited a theological minefield. Eugene I took the chair after his predecessor was dragged off to exile by an emperor who wouldn't tolerate dissent on the nature of Christ's will.
Eugene became bishop of Rome on 10 August 654, stepping into the office after Emperor Constans II deposed and banished Martin I over the Monothelitism controversy — a bitter fight about whether Christ had one will or two. He held the seat through the standoff, navigating the imperial pressure that had destroyed his predecessor. Eugene died on 2 June 657, three years into a papacy defined by the question his emperor refused to let go.
