A ten-month papacy that began in December 1590 and ended with his death the following October — one of the briefer reigns in a long line of pontiffs.
Born Niccolò Sfondrato on 11 February 1535, he rose through the ranks of the Church to become head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States on 5 December 1590. His tenure as Pope Gregory XIV lasted less than a year. He died on 16 October 1591, ten months after assuming the throne of Saint Peter.
