About

Pietro Parolin was born on 17 January 1955 and spent 30 years climbing the Vatican's diplomatic corps, posted to Nigeria, Mexico, and Venezuela before more than six years as Undersecretary of State for Relations with States. In 2013 he became Secretary of State, the Holy See's foreign minister, and a year later Francis made him a cardinal and member of the Council of Cardinals. He shaped the church's foreign policy through a decade of shifting global alliances, most notably as a primary architect of the 2018 agreement with China that gave the pope approval and veto power over bishops selected…
