Francesco Forgione joined the Capuchins at 15 and spent most of his religious life in the monastery of San Giovanni Rotondo. As Padre Pio, he became known for supernatural phenomena that prompted multiple Vatican investigations and temporary restrictions on his ministry, though his reputation for sanctity only grew. Beyond the stigmata, he was renowned for mystical experiences and spiritual outreach to individuals. After his death on 23 September 1968, devotion spread especially throughout southern Italy; Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1999 and canonised him in 2002. His legacy includes the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, a hospital built near San Giovanni Rotondo, where his relics now rest in a sanctuary that has become a major pilgrimage site.
