Tarcisio Pietro Evasio Bertone was born 2 December 1934 in Italy and rose through the Vatican's diplomatic and doctrinal ranks: Archbishop of Vercelli from 1991, then Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, then Archbishop of Genoa from 2002. Made cardinal in 2003, he became Cardinal Secretary of State in 2006 — the Holy See's chief diplomat and Benedict XVI's right hand.
