He built a foundation that puts up million-dollar prizes to solve problems governments won't touch - and convinced enough people that incentive competitions could crack moonshots that XPRIZE became the model. The through-line is always access: space for civilians, longevity for everyone, breakthroughs on a budget.

About this person

Peter Diamandis was born May 20, 1961, trained as both an engineer and a physician, and spent his career wiring together ventures that treat the frontier as a product category. He cofounded the International Space University, then the Zero Gravity Corporation to sell parabolic flights, then Space Adventures to broker tourist trips to orbit. In 1995 he launched the XPRIZE Foundation - the Ansari XPRIZE for private spaceflight put the template on the map. He went on to cofounder Singularity University, Planetary Resources (asteroid mining), Celularity (placental therapeutics), and Human Longevity, Inc., each time pitching the gap between science fiction and incorporated entity as narrower than it looks. He chairs or vice-chairs most of them still.
