Something wrong? The tech founder who pitched $1,000 a month for every American adult ran a 2020 presidential campaign that started as a curiosity and ended with enough traction to appear in seven Democratic debates, a rowdy online following called the Yang Gang, and a new calculus about what automation might cost the country.

About this person
Andrew Yang was born January 13, 1975, to Taiwanese immigrant parents in New York, studied at Brown and Columbia Law, and worked as a lawyer and entrepreneur before entering the 2020 Democratic primaries with universal basic income as his signature idea. Media tagged him a dark horse and novelty, but he qualified for seven of the first eight debates and built a vocal base before suspending his campaign February 11, 2020, after New Hampshire. He joined CNN, started the nonprofit Humanity Forward, then ran unsuccessfully for New York City mayor in 2021. On October 4, 2021, he left the Democratic Party to become an independent, citing polarization, and later that month co-founded the centrist Forward Party alongside Christine Todd Whitman and Michael S. Willner, aiming to offer an alternative to the two-party system.
