King of Denmark
A medieval Danish king who backed his son after a political murder — then lost his throne and his life in the civil war that followed.
Niels, born around 1065, was presumed the youngest son of Sweyn II Estridson and took the Danish throne in 1104 after his brother Eric Evergood. His reign leaned on Church support: he actively promoted the canonization of Canute IV the Holy, and the clergy in turn backed his secular rule. The pivot came when his son Magnus killed a rival claimant, Knud Lavard. Niels stood by Magnus, but the killing ignited civil war. On 25 June 1134, after three decades as king, Niels was killed in the conflict. Eric II Emune took the crown.
