About

Born in February 1960 during his grandfather Hirohito's reign, Naruhito became heir apparent in 1989 when his father Akihito took the throne. He studied history at Gakushūin University and spent time at Oxford reading English, then built a quiet profile as an advocate for water policy and conservation. In 1986 he met diplomat Masako Owada at a reception for a Spanish royal; they married seven years later and had a daughter, Aiko.
