King of Sweden
A Danish duke who seized control of southern Sweden in the 1120s, his claim to the Swedish throne remains contested eight centuries later — some lists count him as Magnus I, others don't count him at all.
Magnus Nilsson, called "the Strong" by Snorri Sturlason, was born around 1106 and carved out power in Götaland from the 1120s until roughly 1132. Whether the Swedes actually elected him king is still debated by historians, leaving his place in the royal succession uncertain. On 15 April 1134 he briefly became co-king of Denmark. He died less than two months later, on 4 June 1134, his Swedish kingship unresolved and his Danish reign barely begun.
