About this person

Neal Kumar Katyal was born March 12, 1970. He joined the solicitor general's office early in his career, working his way to principal deputy solicitor general in the Justice Department. In May 2010, the Obama administration named him acting solicitor general of the United States, a role he held until June 2011 - the stretch when he racked up most of those Supreme Court arguments. After leaving government, he became a partner at Milbank LLP and took the Paul and Patricia Saunders professorship in national security law at Georgetown University Law Center, splitting his time between the courtroom and the classroom.
