Born in Brooklyn in 1933, Ginsburg lost her only sibling at six and her mother just before high school graduation. She finished joint first at Columbia Law School in an era when firms wouldn't hire women, so she turned to teaching - one of the few female law professors in the country, and the first at Columbia to earn tenure. Through the 1970s she built the litigation strategy that dismantled gender discrimination statutes one Supreme Court case at a time. Jimmy Carter appointed her to the D.C. Circuit in 1980; Bill Clinton elevated her to the Supreme Court in 1993. After Sandra Day O'Connor retired in 2006, Ginsburg stood alone as the only woman on the Court for three years, and her dissents grew fiercer. She declined to step down under Obama, survived repeated bouts with cancer, and died in September 2020 at 87 - a vacancy filled 39 days later in a rightward lurch that matched only two others in the Court's modern history.
