Gambon started at the Royal National Theatre as one of Laurence Olivier's original picks, cutting his teeth on Shakespeare — Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Coriolanus — and racking up thirteen Olivier nominations, winning three times between 1985 and 1990. His film debut came in 1965's Othello, and over the next decades he moved through The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, The Insider, Gosford Park, The King's Speech, and two Wes Anderson pictures.
