Born in Madrid on 31 March 1718, Mariana Victoria entered the world as a Spanish Infanta with no obvious path to a crown. Marriage to Joseph I of Portugal changed that, placing her at the center of the Portuguese court for decades. When her husband's health collapsed in 1776, she took the reins as regent, guiding the kingdom through his last year until his death in 1777.
