Liam Payne auditioned twice for The X Factor - once at 14 in 2008, then again in 2010, when producers folded him into a five-piece with four other solo hopefuls and called it One Direction. They placed third. They became one of the best-selling boy bands in history. When the group went on hiatus in 2016, Payne signed with Republic and pivoted solo, landing a number-three UK hit with "Strip That Down" in 2017 and a Rita Ora duet, "For You," the next year. His debut album LP1 arrived in 2019; by then he'd moved 18 million singles and nearly 4 billion streams, though the momentum had cooled. He also cut remixes under the names Big Payno and Payno. He struggled with substance abuse and mental illness throughout. On 16 October 2024, he fell from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires while intoxicated with multiple substances and died at 31.
