Born in Stevenage in 1985, Hamilton started karting at six and caught Ron Dennis's eye early enough to join McLaren's young driver programme at thirteen. He won the GP2 Series, signed with McLaren for 2007, and became the first black driver in Formula One - then finished his rookie year one point shy of the title. He took his first championship in 2008 with a last-lap overtake in the final race, the youngest champion at the time. After four more seasons at McLaren yielded wins but no titles against Red Bull's dominance, he moved to Mercedes in 2013. New engine rules in 2014 made Mercedes untouchable, and over the next three years Hamilton and teammate Nico Rosberg won 51 of 59 races - Hamilton claiming 2014 and 2015, Rosberg 2016 before retiring. Hamilton then beat Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel for titles in 2017 and 2018, added a sixth in 2019, and in 2020 broke Schumacher's all-time win record on the way to a seventh championship. He lost the 2021 title to Max Verstappen on the final lap of the final race amid controversy, went winless in 2022 and 2023, then took a record ninth British Grand Prix victory in 2024 before leaving for Ferrari in 2025.
