About this person
Born August 30, 1948, Black built his act on escalation - routines that spiral from observation into full-blown rants about history, politics, religion, whatever grates. In 1996 he started appearing on The Daily Show under Craig Kilborn, eventually anchoring the "Back in Black" segment that became a franchise. Comedy Central ranked him 51st among the greatest stand-ups in 2004; by 2008 he'd climbed to 5th in their Stand Up Showdown. In 2015 Pixar cast him as Anger in Inside Out, a role he reprised in the 2024 sequel - typecasting as validation. Offstage he's lent his name to the Aruba Tourism Authority since 2009, worked as an ACLU ambassador for voting rights since 2013, and joined the board of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum in 2022 after a decade as an honorary member. He splits time between Manhattan and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, when he's not on the road doing what he does best: staying furious on everyone else's behalf.
