Kobach grew up in Topeka and stacked credentials at Harvard, Oxford, and Yale Law before a stint at the Justice Department and a teaching post. A 2004 congressional run went nowhere, but by 2007 he'd risen to chair the Kansas GOP. Elected secretary of state in 2010 and again in 2014, he used the office as a platform for his immigration hardline work. In 2018 he edged out sitting governor Jeff Colyer in a razor-thin Republican primary, then lost the general to Democrat Laura Kelly by five points in a three-way split. A second-place Senate primary finish in 2020 looked like the end of the line. He won the attorney general's race in 2022.
