Born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, Urban released a debut album there in 1991 before relocating to the US and forming The Ranch, a short-lived band on Capitol Nashville. His 1999 solo American debut went platinum and delivered "But for the Grace of God", his first number one. Golden Road in 2002 launched "Somebody Like You" - later named by Billboard as the decade's defining country single - and "You'll Think of Me", which won him his first Grammy. Be Here became his best seller at 4× Platinum, followed by Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing in 2006, home to another Grammy winner in "Stupid Boy". Albums kept coming: Defying Gravity, Get Closer, Fuse in 2013 with four more chart-toppers, then Ripcord in 2016, which produced "Blue Ain't Your Color", a 12-week number one. Graffiti U arrived in 2018, The Speed of Now Part 1 in 2020 with the Pink duet "One Too Many", and High in 2024. He's charted 37 singles, coached on The Voice in Australia, judged American Idol, and launched a guitar line in 2013.
