Tim Minchin sits piano, sings sharp rhymes about God and love and logic, and the room can't decide whether to laugh or wince. The eyeliner and bare feet are deliberate - a rock-star costume over a conservatorium-trained musician who writes jokes in meter and dismantles sentiment with a major seventh.

About this person

Born 7 October 1975, Minchin trained in theatre before folding music and comedy into a single act. Darkside broke through at the 2005 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe, launching six CDs, five DVDs, and years of international touring. He shifted into musical theatre as composer and lyricist: Matilda the Musical took Olivier, Tony, and Grammy nominations, Groundhog Day The Musical followed with more awards. A 2008 documentary, Rock n Roll Nerd, tracked the rise. He played Atticus Fetch on Californication in 2013, then co-wrote and starred in Upright from 2019 to 2022. Three universities handed him honorary doctorates between 2013 and 2019, and in 2020 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for service to the performing arts.
