Julie Christie broke through in Billy Liar in 1963, then hit international range two years later: Darling won her the Academy Award and BAFTA, and Doctor Zhivago — the eighth highest-grossing film ever when adjusted for inflation — made her inescapable. The late sixties brought Fahrenheit 451, Far from the Madding Crowd, Petulia. The seventies: McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Don't Look Now, Shampoo, Heaven Can Wait, another Oscar nomination.
