In the 1970s I was amazed to be talked about as a '60s sex symbol. I wasn't that person, as if I were a doll from the past. I had to learn to come to terms with that.
To people who've been looked at and considered beautiful, particularly women who relied on it so much... age is quite a challenge.

About this person
Julie Christie broke through in Billy Liar in 1963, then hit international range two years later: Darling won her the Academy Award and BAFTA, and Doctor Zhivago - the eighth highest-grossing film ever when adjusted for inflation - made her inescapable. The late sixties brought Fahrenheit 451, Far from the Madding Crowd, Petulia. The seventies: McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Don't Look Now, Shampoo, Heaven Can Wait, another Oscar nomination. She pulled back from the center but never stopped: a third nomination for Afterglow in 1997, a fourth for Away from Her in 2007. Six of her films landed in the BFI's Top 100 British films of the century, and in 1997 she received the BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement.
