About

Born 25 September 1949, Almodóvar's career took shape during La Movida Madrileña, the cultural renaissance after Franco's death, and his early films captured that sense of sexual and political freedom. In 1986 he founded El Deseo with his brother Agustín, who has produced his work ever since. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) broke him through with an Oscar nomination, and collaborations with Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz followed through the '90s. All About My Mother (1999) won Best Foreign Language Film, Talk to Her (2002) won Best Original Screenplay. Later work — Volver…
