About this person

Born in Rheydt in 1897, Goebbels earned a doctorate in philology from Heidelberg in 1922 and joined the Nazi Party two years later. Appointed Gauleiter of Berlin in 1926, he grasped early how propaganda could drive political movement and, after 1933, consolidated control over all news, media, and cultural output in Germany. He mastered radio and film as tools of indoctrination, spreading antisemitism and shaping wartime morale. By 1943 he pressed Hitler for total war measures - conscripting women, closing non-essential businesses, expanding Wehrmacht rolls - and was named Reich Plenipotentiary for Total War in July 1944, though his efforts yielded little. As Berlin fell in April 1945, he moved his family into Hitler's bunker. After Hitler's suicide on 30 April, Goebbels became Chancellor for a single day, then killed his six children with cyanide and took his own life on 1 May.
