About this person
Born 6 February 1979, Weidel entered the Bundestag in 2017 as the AfD's lead candidate alongside Alexander Gauland, then took the helm of the party's parliamentary group that October. She ran again in 2021, this time with Tino Chrupalla, who would become her co-chair when they jointly assumed leadership of the AfD in June 2022. Between those milestones she chaired the party's Baden-Württemberg branch from early 2020 to mid-2022. In 2024 the AfD named her its candidate for Chancellor in the 2025 federal election - a move that signals the party's ambition to govern, not simply disrupt.
